- UNACCEPTABLE: DELAYED 3 YEAR OLD DRIVER SHOWS UP!?
- Posted by Steele Wolf on February 16th, 2004
My name is Steele Wolf and I would like to direct users
and Microsoft staff members to the following thread-link I
have created at DSLREPORTS.com for an interesting read. I
created the first thread. It's linked below within this
message.
By Steele Wolf.
Anyone at Microsoft care to explain this?
A 3 YEAR OLD driver update mysteriously wanders onto
Windows Update for AMD & Intel Processors:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/rema...8856~mode=flat
I find this unacceptable in terms of how LONG it took to
show up on Windows Update. I am NOT ALONE as you can see
by my following post. I use an AMD Processor and found the
driver update appear yesterday (SUNDAY, FEB.16/04). An
Intel user found a similar update TODAY.
Just how can this be explianed? I use Windows XP PRO and I
have never once encountered strange problems with Windows
Update. I have a healthy system with SP1a applied along
with ALL other drivers and patches. THIS PROCESSOR UPDATE
APPEARED YESTERDAY. IT WAS NOT THERE BEFORE!
Sincerely,
Steele Wolf

Thses "funky" driver updates has been going on a very long time Steele. My suggestion is to ignore it. It will go away in a week or so.

Steele Wolf,
You are, as they say, over-reacting to a quirk in Windows Update. More than
likely you will notice the upgrade disappearing tomorrow if not sooner.
Plus, complaining here is like complaining (actually *is*) to volunteers,
not Microsoft.

This driver update however, is NEWER and adds a new power
management feature taht was unavailable before.
This is not right. Microsoft, get your act together. I got
the patch and now this feature is implemented for my 1600+
XP CPU. It WOULD have been nice to see it here maybe when
it was released 3+ years ago... but... hey... that's
Microsoft for ya.
WAY TO GO!!!!
go away in a week or so.

Who's over-reacting? This is a plain and simple error.
If nobody complained, nothing would get noticed.
If you have no explanation, I care not to hear your "user"
comments so thank you Shenan.

Also.... WHY would anyone want to see a NEWER update
dissapear within a few days?
I don't. So I got it. Along with others. It adds new power
management features to the AMD K7 processors. I don't know
what the update does for the INTEL processors but.... in
any case.... why would you WANT it to dissapear?
Is it to prevent users from seeing Microsoft goofed up
again when they forgot to post an update from a few years
back?
How interesting...

Would you care to share the Microsoft documentation behind this update?
Or did you bother to "read more.." before updating?
I install likely (average) 3 machines per work day. Many times a day I go
to the Windows update site and have not seen the update you speak of. If it
appeared on the Windows Update site, as all the updates have, there was a
"read more" section - where did this lead for you?
As far as you not wanting to hear my "user" comments, so be it.. But you
responded twice. Please respond once more with more information on this
supposed late update. Thank you.

Not trying to add to the flamewar, but never ever update drivers via WU.
Always get driver updates directly from the hw manufacturer.

I'l second that. Too many comments in these newsgroupd from people that
screwed up their systems by getting hardware updates for non-Microsoft
products from the WindowsUpdate site.
Always go to the manufacturer.

Here is the information you seek. Despite it's age (and if
you read the provided posts on DSL REPORTS I gave, you
will indeed notice the file/date versions are newer, and
it adds/enables a specific feature for AMD K7 processors.

*If the link doesn't work... Oh well?
Not that I needed to look up this information at all for
you... but, I did the work which could have been easily
found by anyone by entering the correct keywords. It just
seems you don't believe me. If that's the case, so be it.
Other's have found my information quite interesting and
did not decide to take the course of action in trying to
shoot down this post as FLAME. I quite frankly do NOT
appreciate your initial and contining attitude towards me
bringing something to light that was never initialy
detected before...BY ME...AND OTHERS.
So in closing I'll say this... my comments were aimed at a
knowledeable representative from Mocrosoft and not aimed
towards you (THE USER). I have recieved NOTHING out of any
of your posts as to why it has appeared, but then you
never offered me any help in the first place.
This is my last post,
Consider yourself lucky I even bothered.
Steele Wolf
PS: Heh, I guess it's possible you may not be able to seek
the update I speak of (along with "OTHERS") because there
is a problem with the Window's Update files on the
machines you've built. Bottom line, it's a newer update,
get... don't get it.... I realy could care less!!

As my first message was meant as help and my latter message as a request for
iunformation you failed to provide (as anyone with a problem should provide
details) -- I'll take your comments with the grain of salt they deserve.
The fact is, I help many people on these newsgroups daily - I do not see
such assistance coming from you.
Whether or not it is new - perhaps you should do something (as suggested by
me originally) more constructive with your information. I read all of the
posts you referred to and the other 6 people involved in the conversations
seemed unsure for the most part whether this was newer or not.
Your first post was inflammatory.. Your latter posts have grown more and
more so. You would know - if you read what I wrote - I was not flaming you
but stating that these message boards are not frequented by Microsoft
representatives. They are usually manned by VOLUNTEERS - people with no
affiliation, love or dislike for Microsoft other than the fact they use and
perhaps know a thing or two about the product.
To give you the further information (I suppose you were requesting
something, or just coming here to gripe because you mistakenly thought this
was truly RAN by Microsoft employees?) you want:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=815624
As you can see, Microsoft states:
"By default, Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) do not enable
AMD PowerNow! technology for AMD PowerNow!-capable AMD Athlon and AMD Duron
processors. To enable AMD PowerNow!, you must install the latest processor
driver from Windows Update."
The article is the latest on the matter - dated: 1/20/2004 (2.0).
My guess is that you got it this time because of the recent release of an
even newer version of the Amdk7.sys file. Why did you not get it before?
No idea.. But the information for anyone to improve their perfromance with
an AMD processor has been out there for a while. The numerous links
(including yours and many more) in the above article show the progression of
the Amdk7.sys through at least 3-5 different versions. The activity seemed
to increase at Microsoft in 11&12/2003 for the Amdk7.sys file as can be seen
in 813383 (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813383) because of a change in
the CPUID on AMD Athlon XP-M 2000+ and later processors. Perhaps this is
why you saw the update finally. Which AMD processor are you running? Ah..
the AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1600+ Although it seems strange you wouldn't have
caught this before, blaming those in this newsgroup will likely do you
little good.
Please make sure you are running the latest version of the driver:
17-Dec-2002 18:16 5.1.2600.1152 32,512 Amdk7.sys
