- update install failure - click install now again

I have been trying to download updates from Microsoft
update this morning. Noncritical updates and a driver
update are not installing. My machine is activated.
Autoupdate seems to work. Microsoft update finds fifteen
items that are recommended updates. I select one, the
eula appears and it downloads then I get a message:
"The following items failed to install. To try installing
them again, click Review and install updates, and then
click Install Now again."
I recently reinstalled XP on this machine.
I have several XP's on several machines at home and might
have gotten the wrong disc, but it activated ok. I own an
xp copy for this machine.
What's wrong? How to fix?
