Hello < : )))) ><,
Your header indicates to me that you are crabby at barnacle.net
and that you are not fully updated. It is true that WU let an
update through that gave you and other OE users a lot of pain.
That one got out to keep intruders from controlling your
computer. That's an obsession right now at Microsoft, because
there are fun-loving folks who could take over your computer,
and a lot of other computers, if the patches aren't installed.

If your update log doesn't show them installed, and WU doesn't
detect them either, and your headers indicate an unupdated OE,
I guess you can figure out that the updates haven't been installed.

But you can view the headers yourself. Right click to
highlight the posting, select properties, and select the
details tab. If you need a clearer view, then click the
Message Source button, and maximize it. It still
indicates that you are using 1106, not the latest.

OK, this is no longer Jupiter Jones but me again. Use
the Microsoft server, rather than NNTP-Posting-Host:
aharman.ppp.willamette.edu 158.104.99.138, which you have
been using. If you deal with the Microsoft server
directly, you can better mask your identity. I am
appending George Bindar Dundat's tips.

====== George Bindar Dundat's tips: ======
(1) Before setting up the account, go to Tools > Message
Rules > News > New and create a rule that says:
a) In the top box, place a check in
"Where the message was sent more than days ago"
b) In the center box, place checks in
"Mark it as read" and "Delete it" and
"Stop processing more Rules"
c) In the bottom box, click on the word "days" (in
blue) and set it to a reasonable time frame.
Hint: I keep mine at 15, but choose what is
good for you.
(2) Recently I have had several people who thought that
they still had to go back to the web interface to
send a reply or to post a new message. Not so! The
appropriate buttons are located on the OE toolbar. To
make a reply you select the message that you wish to
reply to and click "Reply Group". It can also be done
by R-clicking the message.
(3) You can use View > Current View > Show replies to my
messages to reduce the viewed list to only the
threads that you have been involved in. Depending on
what version of Outlook Express you are using and
what updates you have done, you may be able to use
Ctrl+H to do the same thing. Reversing the procedure
will show all messages again.
(4) Click the "+" sign to expand the message threads.
(5) Please stay in the same thread for each question that
you post. It makes it much easier for us to follow.
(6) Use a fake address. Go to Tools > Accounts > News,
select the news account, click "Properties" and
change the Email address to a fake. If you get a
message that says your Email address does not appear
to be valid, tell OE to use it anyway. Spammers
harvest addresses from News Groups. Make sure that
you do not use a real domain name.
(7) To change to a different news group click on the
"Newsgroups" button and pick another from the list.
(8) Print out these directions.
