Updating IE 5.5 to IE 6 SP1 on Windows 98
Posted by Ray on February 14th, 2004

I have tried this update 3 times with the same message "a previous installation has pending work requiring a re-boot. You need to restart your computer to complete that installation before running IE set up. Set up will now close". However, Installation History shows that all 3 installations were succesfull. Apparently, IE 5.5 is still functional and I want to keep it that way. Will I still get this message about completing an unfinished installation when I install a future critical IE 5.5 update? Does this mean that I am stuck with the current version of IE 5.5? How can I get rid of the partially downloaded IE 6 SP1 and get back to the IE 5.5 I had before I tried this maddening download?

Try the following:

1. Download the latest Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...p1/default.asp
2. Download the ie6setup.exe file to the Desktop.
3. Click Start => Run.
4. Type in "c:\windows\desktop\ie6setup.exe /q" (without the quotation
marks) and
click OK.
Note: There is a space between ie6setup.exe and /q.
