WARNING: Bug in patch Q811493 and rollup KB826939
Posted by Karl on October 27th, 2003

Hi Microsoft Guys, it does not help at all, to rename a
bugy Patch (Q811493) or to include this bugy patch in to
a rollup with different name (Rollup KB826939).

Attention all XP-Pro Users!!

After installation of the Patch Q811493 or the Rollup
KB826939, you may experience the following errors: -
the computer can be started only in save modus
- the JAVA support not more available
- XP desktop design not available
- System crashes similar to the blaster crashes.

The kind of error depends on, how the patch (rollup) has
been installed. If as a bulk with other patches, you are
in real trouble and new XP Installation may be required,
otherwise just deinstall the buggy patch and your system
is OK.

PS: For any contact go to: www.psaweb.net and use any
contact form or place a support inquiry.

Karl,

There have been numerous people install KB826939 without a single problem,
even if doing a number of other patches at the same time.
Q811493 hasn't *just* renamed to KB826939. KB826939 is a collection of a
number of recent patches.

It would be advised not to scare people in to thinking that they shouldn't
install certain patches; we recommend installing all crucial ones. If you
would like me to investigate your machine, as to why you experienced
problems, let me know.

A few days ago, I updated a friend's computer with all the
updates available from the Windows Update website. I
did not experience any problems with any of the updates.
Perhaps some your computer's system files are corrupt
or missing, or there is some interference with a third-party
antivirus, firewall, or pop-up blocker program.

Just because you apparently experienced a problem does
not lend itself to reasoning that everyone else will experience
the same problem with updates.

I have the same problem, every morning I get the same auto
update, but fails everytime. Another problem is IE doesn't
work properly, I had to install Netscape just to send this
message. Any suggestions?

Posted by David Herman \(507119\) on October 27th, 2003

First suggestions would be to reinstall Internet Explorer, make sure that
works and then re-visit Windows Update. If that fails then I'm more than
happy to try and sort it out with you.

David

That was the first thing I did. Still didn't help.
When I tell the Windows Update to install the updates,
well, I let the selected files for update run for two days,
but nothing.

My current version is: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp1.020828-1920
Cipher Strength: 128-bit
Update Version: SP1; Q818529; Q330994; Q822925; Q828750

Can you please go to c:\windows and post the last 10 to 15 lines of your
'Windows Update.log'?

If we can see any errors near the bottom, it will show that there is a
problem which we should hopefully be able to fix.

I am having the same problem also at the same point. But
it is with IE5 upgrading to IE6 and in patch does not
work. Even a clean upgrade does not work.

navybare,

NOTE: Prior to accessing Windows Update temporarily disable any virus
and Web accelerator/enhancement programs.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
Under :
Problem Downloading/Installing a Software (Non-Driver) item
See : Updates fail to install and you receive error message 0x80070643

Here's the list of suggested resolutions :
Suggestion 1
==========
This can occur if the hotfix installer was referencing:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log and the file was corrupt. Either
renaming C:
\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log or renaming the entire
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2 folder will allow the hotfix install to
complete normally.
__________________________________________________ ____________________
Suggestion 2
============
Register the following system files.

1. On the "Start" menu, click "Run."
2. Type "regsvr32 licdll.dll" (without quotes).
3. Click "OK."
4. Type "regsvr32 regwizc.dll"(without quotes).
5. Click "OK."
__________________________________________________ ______________________
Suggestion 3
============
This can occur if the "Microsoft Root Authority" certificate or the "NO
LIABILITY ACCEPTED, (c)97 VeriSign, Inc." certificate under Trusted Root
Certification Authorities has been removed. On another computer that
has the Microsoft Root Authority certificate installed, do the following:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click "Tools," then click "Internet options."
3. Click "Content," and then click "Certificates."
4. Click "Trusted Root Certification Authorities."
5. Scroll down until you locate Microsoft Root Authority certificate.
6. Click "Export."
7. Follow the prompts to export the certificate to "DER encoded Binary
x.509(.CER)" file. On the computer that cannot install updates, follow
the steps to import the certificate you saved.
__________________________________________________ ________________________
Suggestion 4
============
Try deleting the WUTEMP folder or removing the contents in that
folder. There might have been a trace of a past download or corrupted
content
in the folder that is causing the download to fail.
Temporarily disable any virus and Web accelerator/enhancement programs.

Excuse me, Dave, but...

Karl is right on the money! I have a Sony VAIO PCG-
FXA32. In the days when you could just download Q811493
separately, it would cause my laptop to lockup
repeatedly. As soon as I would de-install it, the
problem went away.

But yesterday I re-installed my Windows XP Home edition
on this machine (I did a complete reinstall). And, sure
enough, after doing the "recommended updates" on my
laptop it "mysteriously" started locking up again.

Thank god Karl identified your new numbering scheme, as I
shall now remove the offending "Rollup" upgrade.

You guys at Microsoft aught to be ashamed of yourselves.
I can't tell you how much time and travail these new
buggy updates have caused us innocent updaters...

Posted by Robert on January 24th, 2004

I have been chasing down this problem for some time now, I was assuming it was something to do with my son downloading some axtivex for some game or installing something of the sort, I unstalled everythign i cound and finally resolved to format my box and reinstall from scratch. It ran rock solid for a couple days, then I installed the critical updates and bang, random lockups again!

I finally found a thread on the HP support site where a group of guys were having the same lockup issue.
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/f...html&forumId=2

The only common denominator I could find was that all reported AMD processors...thought might be a heating issue and stuffed my box full of fans...same thing!

I have since been just running without the q811493 and kbb26939 with no issues, and have been satisfied with that until now. The other day I downloaded the sp2 beta and as I would expect q811493 is part of it, and it hammered my box (knowing its still in beta format I made a ghost image first and was quickly able to recover)....so me nor anyone else with these issues will be able to do any future servicepacks or rollups!

I am a HUGE proponent for installing every single critical update and usually anything else available ( if MS took the time to make the patch, it has to be pretty important, they have many other things to spend their resourses on).

So whats it going to take to get this resolved...I manage LOTS or other machines with these patches and they work fine...I understand that its something specific to this machines hardware, but I also understand its somethnig specific to this patch as well!

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Posted by B.B. on February 16th, 2004

I also experienced the randomly freeze or lockup of my
Sony Vaio FX604. Just want you to know that the solution
for me was installing a new BIOS version.
I found this on http://www.myplc.com/sony/
Many thanks to Brad!
(So maybe it is not a bug in the patch or rollup after all.)

Ronald.
