why can't i install updates?

Make a visit at Kelly's XP Korner.
at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

scroll down to line numbered 257 & 258

On 257, click on the Edit portion & run the VBS script. It will tell you
status on this issue.
Also, click on line 258 & it will do another check. And if you do not have
the security patch, it even lets you start the process.

IF you still have a problem, DO post back with details. HTH

Running the scripts will actually stop the Blaster process, if it is
present.

Do post back with your progress; and any remaining issues.

The update log file would indicate if & why
each failed ---should have error code + some text .
You need to find & "isolate" the section of the log for that "fail date".
Use Windows' Notepad to open this log:
C:\Windows\Windows Update.log (for Win XP & Win98/Me)

Having found the "error" , then do a "search" on this MS page. See MS
Windows Update Troubleshooter
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
