- Why is update taking that long ?
- Posted by John Doe on July 10th, 2003
I've installed Q823559 update today. The download took seconds (DSL
connection)
The file size is 375KB
System restore is off
The installation took 1 minute
Why that long ? All it needs is to copy the 375 KB file, right ? Yet there
is a lot of
hard drive activity with the sounds like it is repeatedly trying to write
something
(and I only hear this kind of activity during the windows update).
FYI - the PC has 1GHz PIII CPU and pretty fast on anything else but Windows
update
installation phase, the download of updates is as fast my internet
connection allows.

The update procedure required searching the hard drive for
the files it had to replace. A one minute installation procedure
is nothing out of the ordinary.
And why are you foolishly running without System Restore enabled?

To make a sweeping generalization, the installation process goes like this:
1. Check file versions and registry entries to ensure that this update
can/should be installed.
2. Extract files from the .exe or .cab file.
3. Replace older files with newer ones.
4. Write to the registry.
5. Write to at least two log files.
There was probably more than one file to install in that 375-KB download.
The net result is a lot more work than copying one file.
