Win98SE - Not Updating - No Error Code - Found A Solution
Posted by Bob S. on March 7th, 2004

This may be of limited value but it's a winner for those
having the same problem. If Win98SE no longer will allow
updates, gives you no error code and only states the
server is busy (constantly) - AND - you have/had Norton
Internet Security and/or NAV installed, that may be the
problem.

Use msconfig (Start > Run > msconfig) then look at the
Startup tab and uncheck all entries that have anything to
do with Symantec products. (ccApp, ccRegVfy,etc.) Reboot
and see if update now works. If so, see below. If not,
put everything back to the way it was and try something
else.

I uninstalled all the Symantec products, ran Rnav.exe and
Rnis.exe from the Symantec site to remove registry
entries for NAV and NIS, then deleted all the
directories. Ran update and it worked okay. Reloaded
Norton 2003 (no NIS) this time and everything is back to
normal.

Tried a lot of suggestions found on this forum, good
ideas, but no listing for no error codes and constant
server busy/unavailable.

Hope this helps someone,

Bob S.
