Windows 98 Software update Q260067 hangs computer !
Posted by ramon on February 11th, 2004

I inadvertedly downloaded and installed software update
Q260067 to my computer running W98SE. Upon reestart the
screen shows message: "MPREXE performed an illegal
operation and will be shutdown" and computer hangs. How to
uninstall this update in DOS mode (impossible to enter
Windows)? Additionally, the corresponding uninstall file
260067UN.INF cannot be found where the uninstall
instructions tell, that is in c:/WINDOWS/INF/QFE ! Could
you, please, help? I have tried to get microsoft support to
no avail!!! What an apalling customer service.

Try to restore a registry that was good before the date the software installed.
After that clear all your history and temp files. Doesn't sound like it installed.
As the computer boots up press and hold your left ctrl key on your keyboard which should get you into a Windows 98 startup menu, in this menu choose the option for command prompt only (safe mode command prompt only will not work).
Once at the prompt type cd\windows\command
Once in this directory type scanreg /restore this will restore a previously backed up copy of your registry. You then should be able to reboot the computer and get back into Windows.
After you start your computer in MS-DOS, you need to restart your computer to start Windows again.
Post to a '98 group-my limited knowledge is to get you by until you do so.
