Windows 98 Won't Start after updates
Posted by John R. Bennett on August 6th, 2003

Hello,

We went to the windowupdate.com site today to update our Windows 98 2nd
Edition machines. All updates went fine except for two machines. Each time
the computers start up and loads Windows we get an Exception error in
Explorer. When I click on details it lists "shdoc401.dll" as the file that
is having problems. When we click OK we don't have a start menu and cannot
navigate at all in Windows. We are able to get a couple of Office programs
running but whenever we try to run another program the same error pops up.
We were just going to try to uninstall the updates but can't even get that
far.

Any help or suggestions is appreciated.

Thank you,

John Bennett

Boot to Safe Mode (F8 just after POST), click Run and type: sfc in the
box and click OK. System File Checker will start. There is an Options
or Settings button, lower right corner. Select it, and check the two
boxes for missing and corrupted files. (I am going from memory, but you
should get the idea) Back out to the main SFC screen.

Find your Win98SE CD and place it in the drive. The first thing to do
is replace the file shdoc401.dll and point the search to the D:\Win98
disk. SFC should quickly find and replace the dll. [I am assuming
shdoc401.dll is in C:\Windows\System and no path is required, but you
might check the file path on a working Win98SE computer and use the
complete file path]. Now run SFC to find missing or corrupt files. This
will take a few minutes.

This could take care of the problem. Might. It has worked for me more
than a few times.
