WINDOWS UPDATE ERROR.
Posted by Aldo on March 3rd, 2004

Hi,

I'm trying to install Windows XP Service Pack 1a, but
when I go into the Windows Update Web Page, the result is
an error message.

Windows Update site ask me for a user with Administrator
Rights in order to install Service Pack. Actually I'm
login with Administrator user, but the message still
appearing.

Can you help me with this.

PD. When Windows Update web page starts, Internet
Explorer says that ActiveX control can't be loaded,
because the current configuration of IExplorer block them.

Here are a couple suggestions:

1) Open Internet Explorer

2) Select Tools > Internet Options

3) Select Security Tab

4) Highlight "Internet" and Click "Custom Level"

5) Under "ActiveX controls and Plugins" Verify the following:

Download signed ActiveX controls = Prompt

Download unsigned ActiveX controls = Disabled

Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe = Disabled

Run ActiveX controls and Plugins = Enabled

Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting = Enabled

6) Under "Scripting" Verify the following:

Active Scripting = Enabled

This can also happened if an installed program is intercepting the Windows
Update process.
Here's a knowledge base article with a list of some known programs:

For testing purposes you may try temporarily disabling any web
enhancement/accelerator/Antivirus programs before accessing the site.
