- Windows Update hangs at 0%
- Posted by Sander on August 20th, 2003
Since a few days I am unable to get any downloads from W.U. When I
click the link to scan for updates, Internet Explorer hangs and I have
to give it the 3 finger salute to end it.
I'm on Windows XP SP1 using IE 6.0 SP1.
I have tried numerous things to resolve this, including anything I
could find on MS Support. The only thing I haven't tried (yet) is
completely re-installing XP, and I REALLY hope I don't have to do
that.
The log doesn't show any errors, the last entry before it hangs is:
"Querying software update catalog from
https://a248.e.akamai.net/v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/getmanifest.asp"
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Tim,
What OS is your puter running on?
I really like to know wether there are more people having this same
problem. I update my virusscanner daily, and run a system scan every
day since the blaster worm reared it's ugly head. So far, my system
appears to be clean from any worm/virus.
Any input in this matter is highly appreciated.

I found a fix, for me at least. The problem was due to
the fact that I had AdShield running. I temporarily turned
off all the blocking options and Windows Update worked.
This was never a problem until a couple of days ago.
I suggest that if you have any type of adware or
spyblocking sw running, temporarily turn it off and run
Windows Update. After it completes you can turn it back
on. There should also be a way to add the link to any
exclude from blocking list, but I am still looking into
this.

I discovered that if I remove ".akamai.net" from my
AdShield block list, I can run AdShield with all of its
blocking options turned on and Windows Update will work
fine.
Look for ".akamai.net" in any block list you may have and
remove it.
I do not know what changed with Windows Update, and why it
is now necessary to do the above.

Hiya,
Thanks so much for your input. Unfortunately, I don't have an
adblocker or spyware blocker installed.
I did however use to have a trial version of Norton Internet Security
installed, and I have found some residual files which I have deleted.
But alas, to no avail. Windows Update will still hang as soon as I
click Scan for Updates. Could it be that there's some residual
registry information that needs to be deleted as well? If so, I really
wouldn't know what to look for. I hope you or someone else who happens
to read this, can help me.
TIA,
Sander
