did you, by any chance, attempt to install new drivers via Windows Update,
and in particulkar, install a new device driver for your CDROM?

If so, and if you are running Windows XP, go back to Device Manager, locate
your CD, and attmept to "roll back" the most recent driver. I had to do
something similar for a NIC card recently. In general, I tell people NOT to
do device driver updates via WU. You can use WU to see if there "may" be
newer device drivers -- but then go to the actual device manufacturer and
get any updates directly from them.
