Windows Update Script Error
Posted by MicroHard on August 11th, 2003

Running Windows Update in Win 98 from IE 6, and after I
hit the install button, the "Microsoft Windows Update -
web page dialog" appears, but the "accept" button is
greyed out. I get a window over this saying, "an error
has occurred in the script on this page, object doesn't
support this property or method, line 2, char 1, code 0"

It references
URL:http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/msdownload/update
/v3/static/eula/en/eula.htm

Other people have had similar problems, and sometimes if
you remove some items, it will install the remaining
selected items, but very rarely.

The Windows Update troubleshooter says to uncheck
the "automatically detect setting" and "use automatic
configuration script" in the LAN settings, but says it
only applies to Windows 2000 and XP. I have 98, and
neither of these settings in checked, but I still have the
problem.

MH,

Did you check out this one ? :
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
Under : Problem reaching Windows Update
See: General troubleshooting for scripting errors

There are several more recommended steps described there. Were you able
to use Windows Update and just recently started having this issue or has
it been an ongoing one ?

Since I reference "The Windows Update troubleshooter" in
my message, it can be reasonably assumed that I did!

And my statement, "Other people have had similar problems"
can be reasonably taken to mean that it is an ongoing
problem. Microsoft denies the problem exists, insisting it
only happens in XP/Win 2000.

Excuse me, but this is what you posted :
Silly of me to assume that you checked any other reference to a script
error. Good luck with your issue.
