Windows Update thinks I have Win98 instead of XP
Posted by Dan on August 17th, 2003

I have Windows XP Pro SP1 installed on my computer. I
upgraded from Win 98 (not second addition). Whenever I
scan for updates, Windows Update reports that I have no
updates to install. On the right hand frame, it
lists "Critical Updates...", "Windows 98 and Windows 98
Second Edition", and "Driver Updates". It appears that
Windows Update thinks I have a version of Win 98 still
installed on my computer, instead of Windows XP Pro. Why
does it indicate this and what can I do to solve this
problem?

It was on a post from several days ago. Thanks Sky King!

Hi;

Give these steps a go:
1. Click "Start," and then click "Run."
2. In the "Open" box type regedit and click "OK."
3. Browse in the left frame to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersi
on.
4. In the right frame you will see the
key "VersionNumber." Highlight this
key and click "Delete."
5. Click "OK."
6. Restart the computer.
