I am able to download the windows updates, then it locks
up and doesn't go into installing them. I am using
windows xp, on a compaq 2100us notebook.

Are you using the AOL browser? If so minimize AOL and use Internet
Explorer.
Check the Windows Update.log file for any error messages:
Copy and paste "%windir%\windows update.log" (w/o the quotes) into the
Internet Explorer address bar and hit Enter.
The Windows Update.log will open in a separate window. Scroll down to the
bottom of the log and locate the error. The date and time are listed on the
left hand side. Any error message?
