I have downloaded "Cumulative Security Update for Internet
Explorer 6 SP1 (KB824145)" but although it appears to
install it lockes up. Has anyone got any advise.

Uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs (Internet Explorer Q824145)
Download 824145:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tre...n/MS03-048.asp
Reboot
Disable all unnecessary applications including antivirus.
Install 824145 manually
Reboot.
