- Windows XP automatic update
- Posted by Bobby Brown on September 11th, 2003
I am trying to get Windows XP to automatically update critical patches on my
PC. I have the automatc update service running, and have turned it on in
the auto update tab of my computer and it will not update. I am trying the
run in the background feature. The patch that is out there now is #824146
and I have tried several times to set it to run an hour from now. It makes
no attempt as near as I can tell. I am looking in the add delete programs to
see if it has run, plus I rescan and the computer says I need the patch.

Hi Bobby,
View the Windows Update.log file for any current errors:
Copy and paste "%windir%\windows update.log" (w/o the quotes)
into the Internet Explorer address bar and hit Enter.
Scroll down to the current date and look for the error being reported.
Check the Event Viewer for errors:
Start > Run
Type "eventvwr" (w/o quotes)
Press OK
Event Viewer will open
Look in the Systen Logs
Sort by Source and look for Automatic Updates
Any errors?
Try Stopping and Starting the Automatic Update Service
To reset the client:
1. Right-click My Computer and select Manage
2. Double-click Services and Applications
3. Double-click Services
4. Right-click the Automatic Updates service and select Stop
5. Repeat to Start the service.
Thanks,
Lucy [MS]
