Security settings have been checked and rechecked, IE6
installed and reinstalled (manually, because IE6SETUP says
it can't for some reason, possibly related?)... And I even
searched the KB for the error code 0x8009200d and got no
matches. Zip.
Now, my theory is that the error 0x8009200d is what causes
the two following 0x800b0004 errors... But what could be
causing the 0x8009200d errors?

Turns out the problem was that SSL connections weren't
working due to the "Cipher strength: 0-bit" issue in the
KB. (Article KB261328.) Reinstalling ADVAPI32.DLL fixed
that problem, and now I can connect to SSL servers, and
Windows Update correctly retrieves the list of available
updates.
However... When I select one of the updates and then try
to download it, I get an error message, a nice generic
one, with the code 0x800A138F at the bottom.
Here's what's in the log:

"The data is invalid"? Be more specific, please! I'm a big
Star Trek fan and I will not have my operating system
insulting Commander Data by calling him invalid!
Seriously, though... What can I do about this? Am I going
to have to replace more DLLs, or something else?

At first, it looked like the exact same page... But then I
chose a bunch of updates (about ten) and they all
downloaded and installed without a hitch.
Thanks. Now that's one less thing I have to complain
about...
Next step: Figuring out why Systray locks up (100% CPU
utilization and a "Power Meter: The program is not
responding" message on shutdown/reboot if I don't End Task
on it beforehand), why the "Sounds & Multimedia" Control
Panel says there are no playback devices even though the
sound card (it's a Creative Labs, by the way) appears as
present and enabled under the "Advanced" tab, et cetera.
(I have a joke about the ME in "Windows ME" standing
for "Messed Up". Is it an unfair reputation? You tell me.)
