WinXP home: WinUpdate stuck at "Checking for latest..."
Posted by Alan Hoyle on February 11th, 2004

Hey. I'm running Windows XP Home on a Dell Insprion 8200 laptop.

Whenever I try to run Windows Update, it hangs at the "Checking for
the latest version of the Windows Update software..." screen when
trying to load http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp .

I tried looking at the Windows Update troubleshooter and applied the
following changes from there:

1. I disabled ZoneAlarm from my startup settings
2. I installed the "Microsoft Scripting 5.6" for XP.

In addition, I've also disabled WebWasher and Norton AntiVirus.

None of these changes made any difference and it still hangs at the
"Checking for the latest version..." page.

Anyone have other hints to try? The automated critical updates still
show up on occation with a pop-up, so I'm still getting some of them....

Having the same exact problem. Different computer.

Might be a Microsoft glitch?

Alan,

It sounds like something is intercepting the ActiveX controls from
initializing.
Although you disabled Zone Alarm you may want to verify the "TrueVector"
processes is not running.

Lucy,

The TrueVector process isn't running and I still can't get anything to
happen. What other ways are there of disabling ActiveX controls? In
general, I don't trust things to run. I've tried adding
*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com to the "trusted sites" in the Security.
