- WinXP Pro 'Admin Only' blocks update
- Posted by AlanK on September 17th, 2003
WinXP Pro ; 1 user - Administrator - Administrator has 'Everything'
privileges.
However, I get 'Administrators Only' message when I try to access Windows
Update.
I have tried each and every suggestion in this group, and in the various
info bulletins from MS, but still am having no luck.
It seems that - although I can't be certain - this inability to update began
after I did the Windows Hotfix KB823980. At any rate , thats the last update
listed in Add/Remove programs.
I re-downloaded that update, from the info page, and reinstalled, but still
, the 'Admin Only' problem presists.
Are there any suggestions that go beyond the usual that I have seen? Anyone
else not having success with the published fixes?
Here are the last few lines of my update log:

Allan have you tried the following?
This issue indicates a problem accessing a resource and may not indicate a
lack of administrative privileges. One of the resolutions below may help.
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
1. Click "Start," and then click "Run."
2. In the Open box, type regedit and then click "OK."
3. Locate and select the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WindowsUpdate
4. click "Edit," and then click "Permissions."
5. Click "Add," and then type "Everyone" in the
dialog box that appears.
6. Click "Check Names," and then click "OK."
7. Select "Everyone" in the "Group or user names" list.
8. Under Permissions for "Everyone," select the "Full Control" check box
in the "Allow" column. Note that the "Read" check box in the "Allow"
column is now also selected.
9. Select each user, in turn, in the "Group or user names" list, and then
verify
that no check boxes are selected in the "Deny" column. Clear any check
boxes that are selected in the "Deny" column.
10. Click "Advanced," and then select the "Replace permission entries on all
child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects" check
box, and then click "OK."
11. Click "Yes" if you are prompted for confirmation.
NOTE: You should also check the firewall and the proxy server settings and
configurations, or ask the appropriate administrator to do so.

I too have this problem. I started going through the list below but
when I get to step 10, I place the check mark by replace permissions.
I click apply, it asks for confirmation, I click yes, but then it
unchecks itself. What should I do now? I am not sure if it matters
but, under the list for everyone during step 10, says its not
inherited. Thank you for any help you can give.

My 'replace permissions . . .' unchecks as well; same weird behavior. This
procedure does not fix my problem but maybe its related to the fact that the
check box unchecks itself.
