- WUpdate for XP locks up
- Posted by Steve on September 4th, 2003
Every time I try to access WU, it locks up with this
message displayed:
"Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update
software...
Depending on your connection speed, this might take a
minute. During this time, you may receive one or more
security warnings. Review each security warning to ensure
that the content is signed by Microsoft, and then click
Yes to install the software."
The tech support FAQ suggests it's a Zone Alarm problem,
but I've had ZA for over a year, and the problem just
started. Even so, I've removed ZA completely and still
have the problem.

I also have exactly the same problem, update was working
fine with the latest version of Zone Alarm running until a
few days ago. Shutting down Zone Alarm makes no difference
at all.

Verify the latest controls are being installed:
In the c:\windows\system32 directory check the version number for both:
iuctl.dll
iuengine.dll
Both file should be latest version 5.4.3790.14
Also check the Windows Up[date.log file for any errors:
Copy and paste "%windir%\windows update.log" (w/o the quotes)
into the Internet Explorer address bar and hit Enter.
Scroll down to the current date and look for the error being reported.
Thanks,
