- Xerox MFP stops working after W2K Update
- Posted by Lorey on August 2nd, 2003
Has anyone else had a problem with this update scrambling
data to their printer? I installed the Update - and then
the printer stopped "seeing" whats on screen
(prints "blobs"). AND Scanner does not communicate a
picture back to the computer.
BUT I can run printer self-tests from computer to the
printer, so it does seem to communicate, but does
not "see" a picture/data exchange.
Does anybody have a fix or workaround for this security
update, to fix a Xerox MultiFunction Printer
(scanner/copier)? Xerox is unable/unwilling to come up
with a fix. I did what they told me (TWICE) & still not
working. Printer works again when I uninstall WinUpdate.
Another example of "Planned Obsolesence"?

Incompatible third-party programs are known causes of printer problems.
To test this idea try disabling all BHO. If the symptom changes and
you need to re-enable the feature you can refine your diagnosis using
tools such as BHODemon (from DefinitiveSolutions).
The test is simply a matter of unchecking the option
Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)
(Internet Properties, Advanced tab)
In order to satisfy the restart caveat you should make this change
using the Control Panel's Internet Properties tool with all instances
of IE closed. See this KB article for more instructions:
<title>298931 - How to Disable Third-Party Tool Bands and Browser Helper Objects</title>
If that helps but you lose some desired functionality you can reenable
the option and refine your diagnosis by using tools such as BHODemon
spybotsd and adaware.
Use Google Groups to search the ie6 newsgroups for posts
by others which refer to spyware or bad BHO for more explanation
and help. E.g. paste the following link into your IE Address bar
http://groups.google.com/
click Go and enter the following search (or anything else you prefer):
(spyware OR "bad BHO") group:microsoft.*.ie6.*
Good luck
