XP administrators only message
Posted by Richard on November 6th, 2003

Hi,

On Windows XP professional SP1a on windows update i get:
Administrators Only

To install items from Windows Update, you must be logged
on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators
group. If your computer is connected to a network,
network policy settings may also prevent you from
completing this procedure.

Note If you are running a Windows 2000 (except
DataCenter), Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 operating
system, you can run the local administrator account on
your computer without having to log off and then log on
again.

Anybody fixed this one? Have tried the suggestions from
Microsoft. Had this problem fo ages now. Here is what I
have done:
Closed all running background apps.
Added the update sites to the IE proxy excetions list.
Re-applied http 1.1 settings to ie 6.1.
Re-enabled automatic updates.
Disabled group policys preventing windows update.
Checked for various registry keys as documented in
Microsoft fixes for this issue.
Restarted the service as advised in knoledge base.
Today I once got this error:
While the Windows Update Web site is loading, you receive
Initialization error 0x80072EE2 - did as advised and
undid as was advised on this error but cant get this to
replicate only keep getting the Administrators Only error.

Any ideas welcome, I really need to get this fixed as it
causes me so much inconviences.
Richard.

Richard;
First verify that you are logged in as an Administrator.

Follow this:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
Look for "When trying to use the Windows Update Web site you receive
an "Administrators Only" error message"

Otherwise perform this checklist:

Hi,
Have tried all your suggestions.
I found quite a few things I had not tried but the error
is the same.
Have done all solutions on:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=326686
"Windows Update Was Disabled by Your System
Administrator" Error Message

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;316524
"Administrators Only" Error Message When You Attempt to
Use the Windows
Update Site

In my "windows update.log" in c:\windows, the error was
not 0x8B0001 or 0x8B0004. Its Error 0x80070005: Access is
denied.

Checked all on this site list:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/Updtcl.htm

Any more ideas please?
Richard

Did you try these (From the Windows Update Troubleshooter)?
Resolutions:
Suggestion 1:

This error can occur if you have mapped network drives configured and
you don't have the correct permissions to access them. Try
disconnecting all mapped network drives and then try accessing the
Windows Update site and see if the installs still fail.

Suggestion 2:

If you are using the NTFS file system on your hard drive(s) then try
these steps.

Check permissions on the C:\WUTemp folder (if you have more than one
hard drive, check this folder on each drive).

1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. Navigate to the C:\WUTemp folder.
3. Right-click on the folder name and select Properties from the
popup menu.
4. Click on the Security tab.
5. Set Full Control access for the following accounts:

Users
Power Users
Administrators

6. Click Apply, then OK.
7. Now try accessing the Windows Update site.

Suggestion 3:

1. Click on Start, Run and type "REGEDIT" (w/o the quotes). The
Registry Editor will open.

*WARNING*

Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems
resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use
Registry Editor at your own risk.

2. Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WindowsUp
date

3. On the upper menu, click on Edit, and select Permissions from the
drop-down list.
4. Give Administrator (And / Or System) Full Control and Read
permissions by checking the allow boxes. NOTE: In certain instances
these boxes are grayed out. Insure that all accounts have appropriate
permissions.
5. Click Apply, then OK.
6. Close the Registry Editor.
7. If you had to make any changes, then try the Windows Update site
and see if the error persists.
