- xp can no longer surf web
- Posted by c on November 21st, 2003
Hi,
Some recent update to my xp system has caused it to not be able to
communicate with dns anymore. I can ping addresses and go to web sites by
ip address but not by name. I have verified that everything is correct on
the network config, and in fact, another machine on my network that has the
same config works fine. I can only think that it is something to do with an
automatic update. Any one else having this problem?
thanks,
Chris

Yes and I just posted a message. Maybe not the same
question and problem but it happened after Windows Update.

More info. When I discovered the problem I rolled back my system using the
system restore feature and it worked for several days, until today, when my
computer automatically downloaded "Security Update for Microsoft Windows XP
(KB828035)" and prompted me to install it. I did so and rebooted and this
is when it happend again. Unfortunately I wasn't wise enough to use the
restore point created when the fix installed and decided to uninstall this
fix manually instead - well, I still have the problem and now on top of that
I can't restore back to any other of my restore points....big bummer. Any
ideas?

I really don't think this is a config problem - It's been working for over a
year and just stopped. I'm convinced that something got hosed during a
windows update. Guess the best remedy is to reinstall xp....hopefully it
won't happen again...
any other ideas would be appreciated.
thanks for all your time.
Chris
