- XP Pro Windows Update
- Posted by Stephen on August 19th, 2003
I had to do a fresh install today of XP Pro. This
requires a re-install of all updates. When I try to
download and install them, all fails. There is no error
message number, all I get is that the updates failed to
install. Any help or suggestions appreciated.

There seems to be a temporary issue with some COX ISP subscribers
being unable to access the Windows Update web site. Microsoft
is working with COX in an effort to resolve the problem.
Read this snip for a temporary workaround:
"Hello all - I was having problems yesterday and tried replacing the cab
file, entering trusted sites, etc, but nothing seemed to work. Apparently,
the windowsupdate site IP address was changed by Microsoft and several ISPs
(including COX) haven't picked up the new IP address from the DNS yet.
Add the following line to your hosts file (located in
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc):
208.172.158.234 download.windowsupdate.com
This solved the problem for me and I am able to successfully update on all
my computers.
Thanks to Tom (Wart) for posting the info. Hopefully it will be the
solution for some people...."

Hey Stephen,
In the same boat you are. From what I've gathered so far
it's probably a DNS caching issue with your ISP. I tried
Cox cable (in Omaha) and Earthlink dialup, Cox doesn't
work while Earthlink does. I contacted Cox and the rep I
spoke with confirmed it's an issue that they are working
on.

I hate to sound foolish, but how do I enter that line? I
used Notepad and saved it to the etc. file but that
didn't do it. What should I name it?

Thanks, this fixed my problem. I am on cox.net
All I have to do is remember to check when Cox fixes the
problem and remove the patch.
