When WindowsUpdate runs and downloads files, all of the updates as saved to
a location. On Windows 2000 it is a folder called WUTemp, that is located
off the root of the harddrive with the most amount of space. I do not know
where the files are stored in Windows XP, but that should be fairly easy to
find if you pay attention to what it is downloading.
After it's downloaded and done installing but before you reboot the computer
you can copy the files elsewhere.
If you ever have to reload your system you can just put all those files out
there after you reload and then run windows update, the download piece will
fly through since you already have the files. I would run it through
Windows update since it is applying multiple patches at one time.
Thats what I've done and it's worked for me.
