- XP Update
- Posted by Bruce Bowker on February 26th, 2004
XP has decided not to allow me to update. I have accessed
the help site and the item below explains exactly what has
happened but none of the suggestions work.
When trying to use the Windows Update Web site you receive
an "Administrators Only" error message (Windows XP only)
Before I would just access Windows Update and it would
run. I did not change any settings but one morning I
suddenly had to be an administrator. I have a single user
machine, not networked.
I tried making a new user and then use "run as" but that
did not work.
Thanks for any help.

You are going to have to log on with an account that has
Administrator rights. Windows Updates have always
required Admin rights because it changes system files.
You can't use Runas because Internet Explorer can't be run
as another user. You just need to log off and then back
on with an Admin account.

Charlie - thanks for your input. I tried all of that but
nothing works. My current acocount does have
administrative rights. I made a new account with ad.
rights also and that would not work either. This all
changed one morning without me asking it to do so. Before
I needed no rights, update simply worked.
