XP Update problem - Update Now button repeatedly displays
Posted by Mow Green on July 4th, 2003

Jan,

Check your date and time to ensure that they are accurate.
Also, check to see that there is a Language chosen for
Internet Explorer. You may do this via Control Panel | Internet Options
On the first page ( General ) click the Languages button and make sure
that your particular language has been selected and is listed on top of
any other ones.

Also, if you haven't already, go here :
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
look under : Problem reaching Windows Update
see: Software Update page repeatedly displays "Update Now" button.

Jan,

Next... what firewall did you disable, the one that comes with XP or
or a 3rd party firewall. Make sure XP's firewall is disabled if you are
using a 3rd party firewall .
Check to see if you have any any unnecessary proxy or automatic
configuration settings via Internet Options, Connections tab...click the
LAN settings button to check them out.

When you went back to Win Up, did you still get the same entries in your
Windows Update.log ?... or were there different error messages ?

If the software controls are not installing or are becoming corrupted,
look towards a 3rd party software ( ANY Norton product ; your antivirus,
firewall, pop-up stopper, ad blocker, cookie utility, internet "speed
booster" ) as being the possible culprit.

Have you attempted to remove and rebuild the ActiveX Controls ? :
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319585

" Remove the Windows Update ActiveX Controls

1. Click Start, and then click Search.
2. Click More Advanced Options, and then click to select the Search
hidden files and folders check box.
3. Type iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll, and then click Search.
4. If these files are found in your C:\Windows\System32\Dllcache
folder, delete them.
5. If these files are found in any folder other than
C:\Windows\System32, delete them.
6. After you have deleted all other copies of these files, delete
them from the C:\Windows\System32 folder.
7. When you are prompted to insert the Windows XP installation
CD-ROM, click Cancel.

Note You will download newer versions of the files from the
Windows Update Web site.
8. When you are prompted to answer if you want to keep the
unrecognized file versions, click Yes.
9. Visit the Windows Update Web site and install new copies of the
ActiveX controls. "

If the above brings no relief, try this :
Errors Occur When You Try to Install Updates from the Windows Update Web
Site
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb817753
or
HOW TO: Troubleshoot Problems Connecting to Windows Update
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=818018

And, there's always the manual download of updates :
HOW TO: Download Windows Updates and Drivers from the Windows Update Catalog
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=323166

I hope this helps you, somehow,
MowG.

Hi Mow,

thanks for all your help so far, I finally managed to get the update scan
started ;-))

However, now I seem to have serious installation problems - only 2 of the 20
(or so) updates found could be installed,
I get the following error for the other updates on the web-based logfile
(sorry this is in German, but I'm sure you'll get the idea):
