XP updates every time online
Posted by MorganCraft on February 21st, 2004

Hi all and thanks in advance for your help or suggestions.

I have XP on my Dell. Windows Update runs every time I go
online. The icon (bottom tray) says it's downloading,
then when it reaches 100 percent, the icon simply
disappears. I have no idea what it's downloading, as my
Windows Update is already current. I get no install or
other directions. Any ideas? Is this just an XP thing?
I've had this system for more than a year and it's never
done this before.

Hello,

If you access the Windows Update site and scan for updates there's no
updates offered, correct?

Stop the Automatic Update Service
Click Start > Run
Type "services.masc." (w/o quotes) Press OK
Find Automatic Update, right click and select Stop
Next, delete the contents of the wuaudlnd directory located in
c:\program files\windows update\wuaudlnd.tmp
Restart the Automatic Update service. (same steps as above)

Any change? If the problem persists please post the last 20 lines of the
Windows Update.log file

To view the file:

Copy and paste "%windir%\windows update.log" (w/o the quotes)
into the Internet Explorer address bar and hit Enter.
Scroll down to the current date and look for the error being reported.
Please post the last 20 lines from the Windows Update.log file
