I recently discovered my install of XP wouldnt run the
windows update feature saying my Active x controls were
disallowed or something. I checked and they were fine. So
I followed the advice of a MS tech doc and removed all
the relevant active X stuff. Now it still doesnt work and
stuffed if I can get it to run. Short of a full
reinstall, can someone tell me the fix for this please !!

The following is taken from the Windows Update troubleshooter:

Problem Description:
This message is displayed when your security setting in Internet Explorer is
set too high. For Windows Update to work properly, you must change the
security settings for the Internet zone to Medium or lower.


Resolutions:
Open Internet Explorer
1. Click on Tools from the top menu bar
2. Click on Internet Options in the drop down menu
3. Click on the Security tab
4. Click on the Internet Zone icon
5. To adjust your security level, click Default Level or Custom Level.
6. Try setting the Custom level to Low and see if the ActiveX error
persists.

Another approach is to add the following domain names to the Trusted Sites
Zone:

http://Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Http://V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://Download.Windowsupdate.com

To add these sites, follow these steps:

1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click Tools / Internet Options
3. Click the Security Tab
4. Click on the Trusted Sites Icon
5. Click on the Sites button.
6. Add the domains listed above.

Does this resolve your problem?

I have the same problem and it does not get fixed doing
these things.

My antivirus won't even download now so that's not the
problem (it requires activeX too). Turned firewall off,
still happens.

Where can I send Microsoft the bill for my time?
Seriously.

Take a look at C:\Windows\Windows Update.log. If there are any errors
toward the bottom of this page, please post them here.
