Hi everybody,
Brand new Dell inspiron Pentium Celeron 256MB RAM 40GB HD XP professional
2002 and Microsoft Works v7.0
The problem, one of Works text files I'm working on has reached 531kB size
mainly because added 6 scanned pictures (40.. 50kB each picture JPEG scanner
EPSON 4850 printer). So, now every time I want to open that file, Works goes
APPLICATION NOT RESPONDING mode.
When I click on kill application either from Works top right window Xbutton,
or from Win XP tasks manager (ctrl-alt-ldel) the process ignores such
terminate order for at least 5 or 6 times. Works window does not complete
lower side, it is, only black color, messy patches, and mouse pointer goes
BUSY sandclock icon whenever on that Works window.
Only way to stop it I've managed so far, is shut down all other windows,
even if just another one open, and keep clicking on END TASK from Task
Manager.
I followed the book, no unproper logoffs or enough-is-enough mains
unpluging. When turning off the system and restarting problems still there.
Questions:
Q1: I've read similar problems around and a suggestion, uninstal NIS, do you
mean Norton? I've got free trial Norton, it came with sales offer.
Q2: Should I upgrade RAM to 512MB as Mike (Total seminars) suggests? I'm not
scratching wallet without clear vector, if any available.
Q3: if I remove Norton, which I'd like to stay in, then wouldn´t it make
system weak when navigating out there?
IS THERE ANY ONE OUT THERE WITH ANY CLEAR IDEA OR PAST EXPERIENCE TO SOLVE
THIS PROBLEM? thanks in advance for time and attention on this query

John
Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task Manager and select the Performance
Tab. What is the Commit Charge? What was the Peak?
Hope this helps.

Hi Mr Cornell,
The problem was the size of the picture (.jpg, it was 70kB) I halved that
picture and MSWorks seems to work perfectly well now, there where other 6
minor scanned pictures in same doc already.
I also increased Virutal memory from 350 / 722MB to 722/1.4GB , it's a bit
too large so already planning to get double RAM at least, at present 256MB
only. With such doubled virtual memory, it was much easier to close MSWorks
although Task Manager End Task function was still necessary.
I did not jot down Commit Charge figures so I do not have accurate data on
that point, but I am able to reproduce the problem because I kept all files
in a separate folder. I will find out and post the result, I would like to
post Works crashing file and .jpg pictures in case there is some one else
interested to reproduce same situation.
All the best, and thanks a lot for time taken answering,
John
