After compressing "all" can I extract "all"
Posted by Queen Dim Lit on November 4th, 2005

While using Disk Cleanup I accidentally left checked the box for "Compress
Old Files".
Of course system is running at one-quarter speed now as it compressed
everything!
Is there any kind of utility that will extract "all" and save me from this
mess I've made?

Many files do not compress. You can tell which are compressed as the
files names appear as blue characters in Windows Explorer. The process
can be reversed but more information is needed before advising what to
do.

To see all files in Windows Explorer go to Start, Control Panel, Folder
Options,
View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden
files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files
" is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You
should also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known
file types" is not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View,
Details is selected and then select View, Choose Details and check
before Name, Type, Total Size, and Free Space.

How large is your hard drive? Is it partitioned? How much free space on
each drive / partition. How is the drive formatted -FAT32 or NTFS? To
get this information whilst in Windows Explorer place the cursor on the
drive, right click and select Properties.

How much RAM memory? Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task Manager and
select the Performance
Tab. What is the Commit Charge? What was the Peak?

Hope this helps.
