Application Hang
Posted by Rob on October 4th, 2005

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 on an HP Pavilion dv1000 laptop.

I am having a problem where Explorer crashes, which is then followed by a
Dr. Watson error.
In the event viewer, I receive the following errors:

Source: Application Hang
Category: (101)
Event ID: 1002
Description:
Hanging application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, hang module

The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted

I've run numerous anti-spyware utilities and anti-virus products and they
all report that the system is clean.
I recently reinstalled SP2 and it seemed to help for a couple of days after
which the errors came back.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

This appears to be a file corruption issue - with some application causing a
fault in Internet Explorer that causes Explorer to hang.

What new software/hardware has been installed recently. Try removing it,
one-by-one, to see if that fixes the problem.

Or, try a repair install of Windows (instructions here:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm ) and then get all of
your Windows Updates immediately afterwards.
