Back Up My Folders to removeable drive
Posted by Bob on December 21st, 2005

I am unable to simply copy and paste the folder "My Documents" from "C" drive
to a removeable drive. I want to do this for back up protection. Can you
help?
Thanks
Bob

What you want to do requires "packet writing software", which may have been
included with your CD/DVD burner. Otherwise, you'll have to purchase CD/DVD
burning software (Roxio, Nero, etc.)

However, you should know that packet writing software is not as reliable as
regular optical media burning software. I wouldn't burn anything valuable
with packet writing.

I don't think the OP's problem is writing to the CD drive but in getting
Windows to allow him to copy all of the files in the folders to the CD.
The only way I have found to copy the directory is to use a backup
program or to select specific files and folders that Windows will allow
you to copy using Explorer.

You could try using XCOPY with the /H (hidden and system files) and /C
(continue after errors) to get most of the files. Using XCOPY with the
/D /S /Y and /R flags along with the above two flags enabled me to
backup all the files in the Documents and Settings folder except for
about 16 which were locked by the system. This is still a lot better
than copying a few hundred using Explorer before it quits.
