- Bloating Windows temp file
- Posted by Barbara on January 4th, 2006
In the last 2 months a program has written about 20GB of .tmp files to my
windows / temp folder. I have tried a nortons 2005 antivirus scan and several
spybot scans including spyware X terminator. is this a poorly written program
as opposed to a virus/spyware? The files are about 2MB in size, and written
about 3 every 2 minutes. They often have a name like ACR6c.tmp
I am sorry of this question has been answered before but I am unsure about
the jargon used to define this problem, and other postings although similar
did not seem quite the same.

The files are created by a virus or spyware. The biggest tip-off is their
behavior, followed by their names.

Thanks Ted.
Any suggestions on what to try to remove this infection?

You are infected by Adobe Acrobat. Talk to them.

You cold delete them. You could stop reading PDF files. Normally they get deleted when you shut down Acrobat. But if you shut down acrobat via Task Manager's Process tab then Acrobat doesn't get the chance to clean up. Probably similar if you use the Acrobat plugin (view PDFs in IE) as this is something that crashes a lot.

An alternative to Adobe is Foxit.
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
Far less hassle than Adobe!
Use Disk CleanUp to delete Temporary Files. Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp.
You should use Disk CleanUp regularly to Empty your Recycle Bin and
Remove Temporary Internet Files. Whenever you remove redundant files you
should always run Disk Defragmenter by selecting Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Gerry,
I had used "windows clean up Pro" to clean up my discs but strangely it
didn't remove these files. I have manually remove them, now that i realise
they are there.
I will check Foxit out
