Can not safely remove mass storage
Posted by Posthumous on October 4th, 2005

Hello Group,

About a month and a half ago something within my configuration changed and I
think it may have been during an update. Regardless of the USB or Firewire
connection or device (300 GB External Drive, Firewire/USB 200 GB Storage,
2.2 GB GigaBank, 2.0 GB Monstor or Sandisk Card reader), when I try to
safely remove the units from USB or 1394 connections I get the attached
message and it NEVER allows me to remove safely unless I go through a
restart.

Dell XPS
WinXP Pro sp2
Pentium IV - 3.6 GB
4 GB RAM

All of my storage devices were tested on other XP and 2000 machines and they
work as advertised. The problem appears to be with my installation of XP
Pro. Rolling back/uninstalling and re-installing drivers doesn't have any
positive effect. The result is that I have the best drivers already.

Does anyone have experience with this issue?

Many thanks,

P.

"Try stopping the device again later", this means that a program possibly
saving on your memory stick (such as Word or Internet Explorer) is still
open. In such a case you should close all open programs and try removing the
stick again.

Try going into Control Panel>System>System Restore. Change the System Restore
settings so it stops monitoring your USB and Firewire drives. It is the
"program" accessing the drives, and while it is monitoring them, you can't
disconnect them. Another possible culprit would be something like Iomega
Automatic Backup, which also monitors drives in the background.
