Cannot perform a backup to cd or dvd
Posted by OneLuv on February 25th, 2006

I select the files I want to back up, click my dvd drive, and I have inserted
a cd rom and a dvd+r, I keep getting an error message saying I cannot use
that backup name, make sure the path is valid or I have sufficient access. I
am the only one on the computer as the administrator. Secondly, when I
insert the dvd, for some reason the icon switches to that of a cd drive. I
have an external cd burner, but it tells me that it is inaccessible, yet I
can backup data using Nero, and that burner also. I have tried many different
discs to no avail. What could be the reason?

You have two issues here, both of which can be fixed.

1. You can not backup to a CD unless you have packet writing software
installed. Then you can browse to the CD drive and create a backup file on
the CD media.

2. Windows XP can not write to a DVD at all.

Both of these conditions can be conquered by installing either Roxio Easy
Media Creator (with the Drag-To-Disk option) or Nero Burning software (with
the InCD option).
