chkdisk problem

Hi.

I cannot run my chkdisk. on restart i am told that windows cannot open
volume for direct access.

Any ideas?

Have you used an alternative utility provided by a third party like
Norton? These can locking the drive preventing access.

no XP cd avaiable, didnt recieve one
i am familiar with how to initiate a chkdisk thru dos, my problem is
for it to execute, any ideas on how to create one simply would be
great, seemingly this is no mean feat. a XP boot disk would solve A LOT
of my problems................ format is a word that has been in my mind
