- Data Execution Prevention (DEP) with Windows Explorer
- Posted by Kenhoyer on September 28th, 2005
For the past few few weeks, I have been hounded by DEP (Data Execution
Prevention).
I have a Sony VAIO Computer not even a year old. Until recently, I had no
problems. However, now, whenever I run Windows Explorer, it is shutdown by
the standard DEP error message. After a few weeks of this, I did a clean
install. Without even installed a single other program installed, the error
messages returned.
I went into the System panel in Control Panel and opted out of protection
for Windows Explorer... NO CHANGE!!! It runs 30 seconds to a few minutes and
still shuts down.
Determined, I browsed the Microsoft site and found out the ins and outs of
DEP. Today, I went so far as to edit the boot.ini file to turn DEP completely
off (/NoExecute=AlwaysOff)... STILL NO CHANGE!!!
What is it? / What can I do?
With DEP turned completely off (no options even available in System Control
Panel), I still can not use Windows Explorer. I am guessing it is some
conflict with a fairly recent XP2 update, but I'm not sure.

Do you have one of the newer AMD processors that have DEP built into the
chip? If so, see if it can be turned off in the bios.

The DEP function in the System Control Panel says it does not have built-in
DEP, but I am unable to verify.
It is a "GenuineIntel Family 15 Model 3 3.2 GHz Stepping 4" with BIOS of
"AMI - 11000416 BIOS Date: 11/16/04 15:31:07 Ver: 08.00.10".
Thanks for responding.
