DFRAG PAUSES FOR VOLUME SHADOW COPY
Posted by GJB on May 31st, 2008

I cannot defrag my hard drive due to the fact that it pauses for volume
shadow copy. I have not a clue how to fix this, or what a volume shadow copy
is. Can anyone please assist ? I am using XP SP2.

Thanks.

Information on Volume Shadow

Note if the Volume Shadow Copy service (VSS) is activated while a defrag
is performed, then the defragger might stop before it is completed. VSS
is activated when a backup operation is being performed, so either wait
for this operation to complete or disable the VSS momentarily while
running defrag.

GJB

Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, right click on
Volume Shadow Copy and select Properties. In the window is a scroll bar
to the right of Start Up Type. If the current setting is Automatic
change it to Manual. If already set to Manual change it to Disable.
Click on Apply and OK and restart your computer. After the computer has
restarted check to see if the Volume Shadow service is in a stopped
state. It would be better running your computer with Volume Shadow set
to Manual. Now check whether the pauses in the running of your
Defragmenter no longer occur.
