disk drive problem
Posted by kent@adahighlander.com on May 1st, 2008

My laptop hard drive had problems with corrupt sectors. Chkdsk found
several bad spots on the disk and when it tried to reboot, XP would
only come part way up and hang. Same result in safe mode. I got a
replacement disk and XP load. Now I'm trying to recover some files
from the old drive by putting it in the ultrabay of my Thinkpad. The
disk shows up in the Device Manager but nowhere else. I can't see it
in the Disk Management utility, under My Computer, from a CMD window
using DISKPART, etc. I just want to reformat the drive and move on.
Any help on making this drive visible again?

What does the event viewer under system shows you. Change the filter to disk
and see if you are getting bad blocks from disk. If your in the disk
management consol can you rescan to see if there are any changes. Is that
hard drive setup as slave or master. It sounds like to me the drive is bad.

In device manager if go to the properties of the disk does it say its
working normally. Are there drivers loaded for the hard drive?
