Duplicated shortcuts in my Control Panel
Posted by Moonray on November 1st, 2005

Hope that someone can tell me of a fix for this little problem. I used
System Restore a couple of times in an attempt to delete some stuff, and
found that many, many files had been duplicated. I spoke with someone at
Dell Chat and was directed to a progam that helped me to delete hundreds of
files, but I can't figure out a way to delete the duplicate shortcuts that
appear in my Control Panel menu. I hate seeing the wasted space! I can't
right click to delete, can't drag and drop, what can I do? Will I need to
uninstall/reinstall the entire WinXP program to get these duplicated
icons/shortcuts out of my PC? Thanks for any words of wisdom!!

Delete the duplicate *.CPLs from the %systemroot%\system32 directory.

Well thankyou Dave. Had this problem and searched for a solution for some
time. Followed some of the other suggestions in the other groups...and none
of them worked. Restoring back before the duplicates were created does not
work. In fact I think it makes things worse. Had up to 3 & 4 duplicates of
some files. Your suggestion was the easiest to follow and 'by Joe' it works
too! Right to the point. Appreciate it. Have a great day,
Tina
