- Hard Drive Won't Open
- Posted by Maudie on January 20th, 2006
I have a Dell Dimension PC running Windows XP Home, SP2, 2002 edition, with
McAfee VirusScan, both on automatic update. Sometime within the last month I
developed a connectivity issue in "My Computer." When I click on my hard
drive (C
--or either of my CD drives--, instead of the list of folders on
the drive, a "Search Companion" screen comes up. However, if I first open my
"Folders" tree and click on C: there, the folders appear in the big window,
and I can turn "Folders" off. This is the only malfunction I've found. I've
made no changes to explain this, and as far as I know no new software has
been added except Security Updates and MS Malicious Software Removal Tool.
It's been suggested that a register key is corrupted and that it would be
easiest to perform System Restore. I can do that; my own files are all
copied on CD; but I'm intiminated by losing settings or whatever. Is there a
way to just find and fix the register key or whatever? I'm no techie, but I
can follow directions. Please advise.

Thank you, Nepatsfan. I found these articles right after I posted this
question. The fix was easy and worked perfectly.
