OK, for starters, if you can get to this site - go there and do the free
online scan: http://housecall.trendmicro.com This'll ensure that you've
gotten all the crud off the system.
Also, backup everything that you want to save immediately to a CD-R.
Backing it up now will save it in case the system goes down - you can worry
about it being infected later. Using a CD-R will help prevent the spread of
the infection (and you can then scan the CD-R at your leisure).
I use AVG Free, Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta (although AdAware is a good
program also) and the Sygate Personal Firewall (all are free - and they
work!).
I also have numerous other anti-virus/anti-spyware programs ready to go on
my disk (don't use more than one at a time to prevent conflicts). The point
being that no one solution can ever be 100% effective - you need a layered
defense.
Also, for IE, there's lot's of protection available for free:
IE Spy-Ad
SpyBot Search & Destroy
BHO Demon
MVPS Hosts file
and most of all, the tools built into Internet Explorer (to include SP2).
But, nothing will stop a user from telling a program that it's OK to install
spyware/malware on their computer. The most common method is the popup -
most folks will click on it just to get rid of it - what they don't know is
that clicking on it gives it permission to attack your computer. The only
way that I close an unwanted window on my system is by using Task Manager to
kill the process that the unwanted windows is using (in most cases it's
iexplore.exe) - the bad guys can change the buttons on the windows to do what
they want!
Good Luck!
