- how would I figure out what's eating up my bandwidth
- Posted by cherold@gmail.com on October 7th, 2005
Recently a problem installing the newest version of Zone Alarm left me
in an odd situation where I couldn't access websites but was still able
to send email, IM, and do pretty much anything else that wasn't
browsing websites. The file sharing program Shareaza also worked.
Shareaza has a bandwidth monitor, and it indicated that the amount of
data I was downloading was perhaps four times what it normally is. And
this was true until I finally found out how to fix Zone Alarm and
reinstall it.
Even if I'm not browsing the web, or IMing, or anything, Shareaza never
downloads with the speed it did when I couldn't access the web. And
this makes me wonder if there are programs just using a lot of
bandwidth through web connections. But how would I figure that out?
Does anyone know?

If you have cable broadband, your upload and download are not
independent. Let's say you have 4Mbps download maximum and 384Kbps
upload maximum. If you upload at 384Kbps your download will drop to
very small values. The key to maximizing download is to set the upload
maximum to about 75-80% of the max, i.e., 384x0.75 Kbps.

Ah, but that's the interesting thing. When Zone Alarm cut off my
ability to access the web, my upload speed increased a little and my
download speed increased a lot.
