- I have a constant ping sound in the background on the desktop

I recently had to restore my window xp home edition since then I have a
constant ping sound in the background even when there are no programs
running. It is the same ping that sounds when you connect new hardware to the
computer. I have checked all connections and looked through the device
manager. All appears o.k.
The computer pings/chimes about every five minutes. This is rather annoying.
Does anyone have any ideas? thanks
