My PC (XP SP2) has recently stopped recognising two pieces of hardware,
both connected by powered USB2 hub. The printer is connected to the same
hub so I would guess the hub is fine since the printer functions ok.

The first case is a scanner which shows up, correctly named,
on the the My Computer screen. The drivers are installed and the message
reads that this device is working properly.

But, when I try to scan anything, the same computer tells me that the
scanner is not connected.

I have tried reinstalling the software, and also attaching it to the PC
direct, in which case it correctly recognsises the device and tells me
it is properly installed and ready to use - before claiming it isn't
connected.

The second device is altogether trickier, a MIDI interface, but these
problems may be related or the same.
