- Missing boot.ini file
- Posted by Jasper, Newbury UK on October 7th, 2005
Laptop is missing boot.ini file/folder in Windows XP. Boots at startup with
error message but to stop it mains and battery have to be disconnected.
Checking msconfig against my desktop confirms the boot.ini tab is missing in
the Systems Configuration Utility. No idea how deleted! Can boot.ini be
reinstalled and if so how?

If there is no boot.ini file in your Windows drive (usually C
, see if
there is a boot.ini.backup in the %windir%\pss folder. If there is, copy
the boot.ini.backup to the Windows drive and change the name of
boot.ini.backup to boot.ini C:\boot.ini
%windir% is usually C:\WINDOWS.
Paste %windir% into the Start | Run box and click OK to see.
Someone could show an example of a boot.ini file, but need to know what
version of XP you have. I.e Home, Pro, etc.

> Ted and Wesley. Thank you. I am using XP Progfessional. I found no backup boot.ini despite trawling through the registry as suggested. You might be interested to know that I ended up running the System Configuration Utility (sysdm.cpl) - pressing the Advanced Tab - then the User Profiles tab (not the StartUp and Recovery Tab) which asked me whether I wanted to set up a boot.ini file in WordPad. After biting my nails to the quick, I finally plucked up enough courage to copy exactly the same settings from my Desktop which I had running alongside (and after establishing a System Restore point). And unbelievably, it worked! Thanks again.

Glad you got it worked out!
By the way, sysdm.cpl is System Properties and msconfig.exe is the System
Configuration Utility.
That is interesting to note that
System Properties | Advanced tab | Settings button under User Profiles
offers to setup a boot.ini if there is no boot.ini on the machine.
