- Missing desktop properties

When right-clicking Destop-->properties, all I get are the themes. If I put
the XP disk into my machine, it almost automatically goes into Install mode,
and then gets stuck in an endless loop. I need help in getting this fixed.
Also, if I double-click on "My Computer" it brings up a little Error Box
with Explorer writen on it.
Does anyone have any advice?

Clarify...do I need to reboot?
